Just Read “Oath of Fealty”

Image from Amazon
Oath of Fealty by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle

Over the weekend I was traveling and had some time. Wandered into the local book store in the airport and found a book by Both Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle called “Oath of Fealty”. I have always been a fan of both authors and have met them several times when I was much younger and attended sci-fi conventions. Looking at the back the paragraph summary interested me. More interesting was a Chicago Sun-Times quote about how the books demands being read in one sitting.

Well I started the book on the flight back even skipping some prime podcast watching. Then I found I couldn’t stop reading the book. The story is incredible and captivating keeping me up till very late hours just trying to finish one more chapter before setting the book down. While the book covers interesting ideas about society and a possible near future of single building cities, it also does a great job of telling a good story. It’s been a while since I read either of these two authors and this was a great book that any fan of more realistic Sci-Fi would really enjoy.

MySQL and Sun and the Crud

http://www.crypticide.com/dropsafe/article/2461

So I too found the recent Internet fluff on MySQL and enterprise only features being added since Sun bought the product to be an interesting topic.
IE:
www.techspot.com

The basic rumor was that with the next release of MySQL there would be non-GPL backup features and this was the warning shot that Sun was close sourcing the product and it was time to jump ship. Then something amazing happened, a useful comment was found in the comments of the story on Slashdot (which has a s/n ratio of 1/1000). The former CEO of MySQL posted what the real story was and that really people are in a panic over nothing. No reason to drop MySQL and change to something else. This also speaks to the ideas that never believe something you read just because 20 news sites carry it. This is one of the downfalls of the Internet News and how one story that is inaccurate can become very pervasive when people care about the subject.

Please read the link and become well informed. Opensource is alive and well in MySQL and expect Sun will keep it that way.
